Antoine

You are probably right. But - as you know - Churchill did the opposite of sending troops to Tonypandy: when he heard that troops had been sent, he immediately gave orders for them to be halted and to go no closer (the cavalry were twenty miles short and the infantry were one hundred miles short). Anyone who does not believe this should read The Times for the following day, in which a leading article attacked Churchill, saying that "The Home Secretary had no business interfering with the arrangements made by the Chief Constable."

Dear Paul,

Of course, there seems to be a double confusion :
-Jarrow and Tonypandy
-the troops in Tonypandy and not outside

One might add that even the Tonypandy events are almost always
misrepresented anyway!

Readers of _The Times_ are no longer what they used to be - the result of
"Murdochisation", no doubt . . .

Best,

A.C.

How could Churchill have sent the Army to prevent the Jarrow march from
reaching London ? Firstly, the march reached London without any
interference; secondly, the date was 1936 and Churchill had not been a
member of the government for the past seven years.

Many thanks for this. Three remarks in connection with the article :

-F. Kersaudy also wrote a very entertaining book on Churchill and Monaco,
reviewed in the latest issue of _Finest Hour_

-I was shocked to read in the fifth "Comment" following the article
proper
:
"I've never been an admirer of Churchill - calling the Army in to prevent
the Jarrow march reaching London was about as low as you can get. " And
this
by a reader of _The Times_! It seems it is not only the French who need
to
brush up their knowledge of Churchill . . .

-By a curious coincidence, I have just finished reading W.L. Shirer's
_The
Collapse of the Third Republic_. The last page (Pan Books p. 1092) has
this
to say of de Gaulle :
"Back in his rural retreat [in 1955] he finished his three-volume
memoirs,
a
work of stunning literary quality and the French equivalent to
Churchill's
memoirs".
