Adding to what Richard posted:
 
Sarah Churchill's account was published in 1967 while the Duke of Windsor was 
still very much alive, hence the need for tact in referring only to "a friend 
of royal lineage."
 
All things considered, I agree with Stan's and Richard's interpretaion of 
events and that this is a true story involving the ex-King.

Agree with Stan (and David). I don't think it was meant as a put-down.
But WSC, that gifted wordsmith, saw humor in it that the writer
probably didn't see. Surely it was only read to his family because the
recipient got a huge kick out of it. In the end, too, he didn't think
much of "Mr. David Windsor."
