Three Arrested in Norway in Expanding Al-Qaida Bomb Plot On Thursday morning in Norway, officials arrested three suspected members of al-Qaida who they believe were planning a terrorist plot similar to that of the would-be New York subway bombers. Officials believe the men, whom they have been tracking for more than a year, planned to use portable peroxide bombs in an attack on an undecided target. The bombs were similar to those built by alleged al-Qaida operatives accused of plotting to attack the New York subway last year. The New York bombers were part of a broader conspiracy that planned companion attacks in Britain, according to newly unsealed court documents. The New York Times reported that federal prosecutors now believe the New York plot was conceived with the direct input of one of the world's most-wanted terrorists, Adnan Shukrijumah, a former Brooklyn resident who now leads al-Qaida's global operations program, and was intended to be part of a broader campaign of terror. Officials have said that they believe the Norway plan was organized by Salah al-Somali, the man responsible for plotting attacks worldwide until he was killed by a CIA drone airstrike last year. "These changes underscore the global nature of the terrorist threat we face," said David Kris, the Justice Department's top national security prosecutor. The new details were included in indictments bringing charges against Shukrijumah, who remains at large, and Adis Medunjanin, a Queens resident who was arrested in January in connection with the bombing. Prosecutors also said that Medunjanin attempted to carry out a small-scale suicide attack after his co-conspirator was arrested, alleging that he sought to crash his car into another vehicle on the Whitestone Expressway after calling 911 to brag about the planned attack. "We love death," he is reported to have told the operator. Read original story in The Associated Press | Thursday, July 8, 2010
