Could you confirm that I must upgrade my boot rom in order to upgrade to a
current IOS?

Call up Cisco at 1-800-553-NETS and order the part. You pay only shipping.
If your equipment is under smartnet, you don't even pay that. I believe the
part number is BOOT2500=

Oh, BTW, you need something called a PLLC chip extractor to pop the old
proms. Good luck finding one. :->
