Not true from my experience.

I have Bay Accelars as my core and Cisco, Cabletron and 3Com switches of
different types, including a Cisco 6509 and they work OK.

Just make sure you set your Spanning tree root switch up with a different
priority than the other switches as well as you back up root and if you are
doing trunking, you can only use 801.1q between vendors. Only industry
standard routing protocols will work between vendors, IE: RIP, OSPF, Etc.
