With tftpdnld, you need to specify the following:
- ip address of router
- subnet mask of router
- default gateway of router
- TFTP server ip address
- TFTP filename
I usually do this when we upgrade from 8mb to 16mb flash memory. On 3600 and
2600 routers, the 8mb flash (containing the IOS) is physically removed, and
a 16mb (containing nothing) is inserted. After turning the unit on, you are
presented with a rommon> prompt.
After a year an a half playing with Cisco hardware working for a VAR, I have
yet to use xmodem.

If you do not have an OS on the system and you cannot assign an ip address
to an interface, you cannot get to a tftp server.

Brad:
Why would we not use tftpdnld in this case? I know that 3640, and 2600
supports it, so I am fairly certain that the 3620 supports it as well.
I have replaced flash on many routers and have never used xmodem to do it.

xmodem download the new code via a console cable. you might want to change
your config-reg to support 115.2kbps (it speeds the process up quite a bit).
send down a small IOS (IP feature set only) and then boot that image and
TFTP the image you actually want on the box. xmodem downloading the code
takes a while, as it downloads it into RAM first, and then writes it to the
flash sector by sector (or something to that extent)
