Refer to pages 32 and 38-39 of the same book. The protocol field in an IP
header states what upper level protocol is to be encapsulated. According to
pages 38-39, "88" indicates that IGRP is in the transport layer. I hope this
helps although I'm not sure if 9 or 88 is the correct protocol number.

Subject: Protocol 9
On page 232 of Doyle's Routing TCP/IP he states," Unlike RIP, which
is accessed via UDP, the IGRP process is accessed directly from the IP layer
as protocol 9." Can anyone explain "protocol 9"? I have tried a few books
and CCO but can't seem to find an explaination of what it is.
Thanks for any assistance,
