Title: Protocol 9
Kim,

I believe this is the protocol number assigned to EIGRP multicast packets.

I have take the liberty of including a good link to CISCO which has a ggod explanation about
IGRP and this particular topic. By the way, you will truly enjoy Doyle's book. Do all the exercises and try to recreate scenarios whenever possible.
A truly excellent book.

Subject: Protocol 9

On page 232 of Doyle's Routing TCP/IP he states," Unlike RIP, which is accessed via UDP, the IGRP process is accessed directly from the IP layer as protocol 9."  Can anyone explain "protocol 9"?  I have tried a few books and CCO but can't seem to find an explaination of what it is.

Thanks for any assistance,

Kim O'Connor
