Jeff, in terms of design, security practice, and cost effectiveness, may I
suggest a second 26xx router dedicated to the inter-vlan routing, thus
separating your own internal frame network from your shared tenant services
network.

Costs a LOT less, is every bit as effective, and leaves some dollars for
other toys. Those 3548's are good solid boxes, and well capable of handling
your traffic.

Got a question for you. I understand the vlans for security purposes - Bob's
network cannot get to Jane's network, and so on. But can Bob walk over to
Jane's desk and peek at her files when she's out to lunch?

I used to work for a company that got into the mentality of renting rooms to
one man operations. I was charged with making sure the computer network was
such that our client confidential data was not accessible by our tenants.
Whose offices were interspersed among ours, and whose occupants could enter
the premise any time day or night and physically access client confidential
information at any time. Makes sense, doesn't it? ;->

Subject: Switch preference (network topology) question

By next year our office will have over 50 people. This does not include
people who will be in our building and working for other companies. That
number will be around 15 and it will grow. Basically, our building hosts our
company and various other companies and I am part of a two-man IT staff that
runs everything for all companies. Currently, we are using three 3548 XL
switches and a 2620 for interVLAN routing.

In this scenario, would it be feasible (and cost-effective) for me to roll
out a 5000 (or a 5505) with a GBIC module and an RSM to take the load off
the 2620 (which also does routing for our Frame Relay network)?

Thanks,
Jeff
