Duncan,
      The area field is 32 bits. Converting 0.0.0.1 to
Binary gives '00000000000000000000000000000001'. So I
believe it would therefore correspond to decimal area
1.
However, in the interests of consistency throughout
your network you should use one technique OR the
other.
