10000000 = 128
11000000 = 192
11100000 = 224 <- Start of Multicast Address - I think I've heard it called
class D before
11110000 = 240 <- next number up from last Multicast Address.
See the pattern? the next address up from 239.255.255.255 is 240.0.0.0

Subject: IP Multicast Addressing (corrected typo)
I've not read the McGraw Hill's BUMS book yet :-)
I'm reading through McGraw Hill's BCMSN book. Chapter 7 deals with IP =
Multicast Addressing. I understand that class D addresses are used =
(high order bits set to 1110), but a statement used in the book confuses =
me:
IP Multicast addresses start with 224.0.0.0 and end with 239.255.255.255
I'm not real keen on where the 239 came from...
Thanks All !!!
