What I'm trying to find out is in what cases Cisco says that the interface
is up even though there is no cable attached. I'm not concerned about the
line protocol. I'm not asking about the second result or keepalives.

My routers have an AUI interface. Cisco says the interface is up even when
there is no cable attached.

I don't have a router with an RJ-45 interface, MII, GMII, etc. (lame, I
know! ;-) Do you? Could you check? Does it say up even if there is no cable
attached?

The original poster said that his FE says up, down with no cable attached.
Which kind of interface was it?

Just trying to document this with more exact details than Cisco
documentation. It seems to me that with some types of interfaces, it should
or could be smarter. Perhaps it's consistent across interfaces and that's
why I haven't gotten an answer, but I am still searching. Not getting a
real answer is making me down, down.

Priscilla
