Phil,
If this is the case, please explain then why i was able to upgrade my 2516
from a 10.2 to 12.1(8) when there were no boot rom chips on the board? The
two 1/2-inch squares were empty. Yet the sh ver says it has IGS-RXBOOT
something. Am i missing someting here? I did put 16F-16D in it. But I reload
and 12.1(8) looks okay. Of course, I haven't had time to run routing
protocols on it. Thanks.

11.2 wiil work, if you have @ least 4 Megs of RAM.  Your 10.0 boot ROM's
will make the interfaces disappear in anything above 11.3-ish, until you
upgrade them to 11.0's.
