In order to read RIFs, you *really* have to know your binary arithmetic.
This is especially critical because IBM doesn't format the RC part of the
RIF at byte or nibble boundaries.  If you're not up on hex to binary and hex
to decimal conversions, it will make your RIF reading that much more
difficult.
