I concur with 2900XL for a _truly_ IOS Catalyst.  If you don't need gigE,
then why buy the 3500XL just for lab use.  They both run the identical
software, tweaked slightly for the hardware differences.  New releases
are in lock step between them.

The 1900 claims to be IOS but it ain't!  It's an IOS "overlay" on top
of a menu system.  Fairly restrictive.  But if you want a cheap switch
that can handle VLANs and STP, it's an option.

I also agree that the old discontinued 2901 is the cheapest way to get
CatOS, but even with 20MB of DRAM, you're capped at CatOS 4.x.  But
it's fine for practicing syntax and almost all features, and all of
the ports can ISL trunk (no 802.1q).  It's a heavy and noisy monolith.
Essentially a fixed-configuration 5002.  You'll need a torx/spline
driver to remove the blades.
