CSU - A CPE (Customer Premises Equipment), installed at the interface to the
phone company lines, to terminate a DDS or T1 circuit. CSU's provide network
protection and diagnostic capabilities. DSU - A user device interfacing to a
digital circuit. The DSU converts the user's data stream to bipolar format
for transmission. Historically, The CSU and DSU were seperate items. In most
cases today, the two items are combined into one box called a CSU/DSU, which
includes the network circuit termination and the user's device interface.
