I probably see the potential cause would be the baud rate. ( just because
you see some
garbled messages )

Cisco routers by default has 2 bits allocated for baud rate.  2 bits make 4
combinations
viz, 1200, 4800, 9600 and 2400. Try these settings one by one on the
Hyperterm session
that you had connected the system and try.  Let me know the outcome.
