Obviously, there's a lot more material to study and remember if you take the 509 exam. Which way is more rigorous? I believe that it depends on the experience you have with Cisco products. If you're comfortable working with the products and have hands-on experience working with switches, routers, and remote access solutions, you could probably take the 509 without too much trouble. However, without this experience, you're better off taking the exams separately. This is only my opinion.
