I write a shell script that will automatically backup the router configuration every day at 12am midnight everyday. Furthermore, I use SNMP version 3 so that traffic between the SNMP management station (Linux box running ucd-SNMP) and the routers is encrypted. Both SNMP v1 and v2 do not encrypt data. You need to run IOS version 12.1.5 or higher (not sure about this one) in order for SNMP version 3 to work...
