I assume that you are saying that you tried to transfer an image from Flash over the console cable to a TFTP server. You are correct, this isn't possible. The console interface is a serial interface that knows nothing of IP or Ethernet, etc. TFTP being an IP based protocol requires an interface that can have a layer 3 address bound to it. The console is not such an interface. We ran into a situation recently where we purchased some 3620's and the IOS that came loaded on them couldn't recognize the NM's (or interfaces) we put in them, thus not only did we not have any visible interfaces, but we couldn't tftp a newer image to the router. The solution was to use the dreaded X or Y-modem file transfer protocols over the Aux port. It worked beautifully but boy was it slow!
