Well.. on the big cats, 2900s and 1900s, you can set up a monitor port which gets a mirror of data from a port you specify. Works pretty well. You can sniff either port or specify a VLAN to be mirrored. I tend to use the hub as a quicky tool when I'm at an office and out of ports.
On the cheapo switches like Linksys and Netgear, I dont know of any *mirror* function so it's drop and insert the hub. I'm sure other folks here have some tricks and tips..
