Not all of them have 24 ports, especially if he got an older used one. Who
knows why Cisco calls fa0/1 on his particular switch port 13? All I can say
is that there's some logic to it and it's something like I said previously.
So, I can't find any decent documentation on the 2900XL, especially since
he didn't say what model, but at least I can add _some_value to the
discussion.

The concept to learn is that in addition to having an overall Bridge ID, a
bridge also has an ID associated with each port. The Port ID contains a
priority field followed by a port number that identifies a physical port on
a switch or bridge. The vendor can use any sort of identifying scheme it
wants. Radia Perlman semi-ironically jokes that she can't imagine that the
Port ID has any use. But Cisco uses it in the configuration of their PVST.
