Which model switch is it?  If it's running IOS then you simply need an IP on
interface VLAN1.  By defaults all ports are in VLAN1, but if you've changed
it around, you need to make a port in VLAN1 and connect to it.....

If it's using the CatOS, then make sure you're plugging into a port (again)
on VLAN1 since that's the default mgmt VLAN (i.e. can communicate with sc0)
