Morgan,
     The 'enable password' command is the original
command that allows you to go to 'priviliged EXEC'
mode and configure the router/switch. Although the
password can be encrypted, it isn't a very robust
technique and can be cracked by putting the password
back into the algorithm.

     The 'enable secret' came later and uses 128 bit
key to encrypt the password, which cannot easily be
cracked.
