Try this: interface FastEthernet0/1 description Router on stick (2600) switchport mode trunk switchport trunk encapsulation isl Off the top of my head, I can't remember if the 3550 only supports dot1q, or ISL, or both. So if the above doesn't work, use dot1q rather than isl on the router, and forget the encapsulation command on the switch.
