I forgot to address you question about how it all relates to the OSI model. I've always thought of specs such as 232, 422, etc. as being entirely physical-layer specs (max p-t-p voltage, impedance, connector body, etc). However, given the interaction that takes place over the signals that we just discussed, I suppose an argument could be made that there is some layer 2 taking place. To a limited extent, I guess you could say that there is some arbitration for the circuit taking place. I wonder if any of the group's big brains will weigh in on that...
