nagios is awesome. we use it for our inhouse and client network monitoring.

For status on *nix Nagios(http://www.nagios.org) is the way to go. For
Windows Servers Alive(http://www.woodstone.nu/salive) is a great tool,
it's less than $200 or free if you have less then 10 checks.  MRTG or
RRDtool for trending.
