They could. In fact, its quite likely. The link from your CPE goes into a port on one of their WAN switches. from there it goes over a trunk utilizing either Fast Packet (FP) or ATM to another WAN switch. There may be a number of WAN switches between your CPE and the destination CPE. You can get more detail from the documentation on Cisco's WAN switches.
