Hi Werner et al.!

First of all my best wishes for the new year!

Over the recent days, the Debian TeX mailing list has been discussing
ways to start moving to UTF-8 encoded .tex files for Debian's
documentation files. But switching to other distro's (like XeTeX) or
engines (like Omega/Lambda/Aleph) will take too long.

The thread starts here:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-tex-maint/2007/01/msg00066.html

I've suggested that we'd use CJK for UTF-8, not only for the CJKVT
languages but for others as well [we tried even Georgian, remember?].
Do you see any problems with this approach? I can see one, and that
is the problem of ligatures in languages like Indian or Arabic.
Another would be that the list of SFD files will need grow.

On a sidenote, TeXlive still has the old Unicode.sfd file as can be
seen here:
http://www.tug.org/texlive/Contents/live/texlive/texmf/fonts/sfd/ .

Cheers
