Dear List-
I know that in the past a number of breeders, several on this list, have
spoken highly of the Scott's heated whelping nest. Since I am expecting a
litter this coming weekend, I decided to splurge and invest in one of these
nests. I have in the past used a Whelper Helper box, and have put layers of
newspaper in the box topped with a steri-lon pad (nonabsorbent fake fleece
pad) once the litter has been whelped. I now am faced with sinking the
Scott's nest in a ssomewhat larger whelping box, and I have a few questions
(and please excuse me if these sound retarded, but this is a whole new
concept for me!):
Question 1: Since the nest forms a depression about three inches deep, how do
the pups get up to mom to nurse, since the surface is a slippery plastic (I
assume that you cannot cover the nest since the pups must be in direct
contact with it)?
Question 2: What do you cover the rest of the surface of the whelping box
with (i.e., the surface that mom will be resting on? Since the whelping nest
covers a significant area of the box, and leaves an irregular space to cover,
how do you arrange fluffies (lambskin pads) so mom is comfortable?
Question 3: Is it necessary to have any other heat source to use in
conjunction with the whelping nest, other than to ensuring that it is
protected from drafts?
I'm looking forward to receiving some input from those of you have used this
nest. It sounds like a terrific concept, and anything that will keep my pups
from getting chilled while enabling me to leave the temperature control on my
air conditioner at its present setting (I live in Las Vegas and its 108 in
the shade today!) sounds like a godsend . . .
Thanks!
