I agree completely about large litters and c-sections, particularly if the
litter is larger than the average size for that breed of dog. In large
litters, the uterine tissue is often stretched so thin...almost like
paper....that it loses it's contractibility.  Of course this isn't always
the case, but I've seen the uterine tissue that contained nine cavalier
puppies and in places, it was so thin you could almost see through it.
However, with a normal sized litter, if mom is comfortable, not straining on
regular contractions, no vaginal discharge that is of a questionable color,
and you do a vag exam and don't feel a little presenting part that is making
no progress, you certainly can afford to let nature take it's course for a
while.  It's the same with human deliveries.  There are many factors to
weigh, and if all is well, you can afford to give mom time to do the job
without intervention.  Cathy's trick of using a catheter to insert sterile
KY jelly is a good one, and similar to what we would do in labor delivery.
