Jan, according to Dr. Cindy Smith, the repro specialist who practices down
in Lakewood.....there really hasn't been enough mycoplasma documented in the
state of Washington to assume it is a prevalent cause of sterility.
Fertility in the male is really a very delicate thing and can be decreased
by age, dental infections, a silent infection of the GU tract....just almost
anything. You can test your dog for mycoplasma, but the swab must be a
"hooded" collection device and must be submitted in a specific medium. A
good portion of the time, the results are negatives even if the dog did
indeed, have mycoplasma at some point in time. We went down the mycoplasma
road with all of our dogs when we discovered that one of our older boys was
sterile....but it was expensive and accomplished nothing. His sterility is
just his issue and we still don't know the cause after three years of
searching. Myra
