OK, here goes. Now don't anyone get their knickers in a twist...when you show
dogs, you are supposed to know the rules. Now, as to your question.
Any alteration is not allowed. Surgery to correct a fault is not allowed.
Mascara or eyeliner applied to a dogs nose (and yes, I know who you mean) is not
allowed.
Chalk is allowed as a cleaning agent (don't ask me how, I don't understand
that at all)...but it is supposed to all have been removed by the time the dog
enters the ring.
Breeds that have their ears cropped...no bandages in the ring.
There was a time some years back where people had vets run teensy skinny wires up
a dogs ears, along the cartilege, to make floppy ears stand erect. That's not
allowed, either...and you should have seen the judges in the Doberman rings
examining ears back then!
Anything that alters the appearance of the dog (which includes surgeries to
correct entropion or ectropion, etc., nose tattooing, eyerim tattooing, etc.) is
not allowed. This does not, however, include ear cropping or tail docking, both
of which are still considered normal and/or preferred.
Dyeing. Hairspray. The hairpieces used on ALL Poodles...none of that is
allowed.
Trimming doesn't fall into that category, because that is considered
"grooming," not cosmetic. Don't ask me to explain that, either, that's just how
it is.
Braces and rubber bands on a dog's teeth are not allowed.
False teeth are not allowed. Stuff (and yes, I know the name of it but don't
want to give anyone any more ideas) to darken the eyes is not allowed.
Technically speaking, the white stuff (whatever kind you choose to use) used
to cover up tear stains, is not allowed.
Anything used to change coat texture is not allowed. Anything used to change
coat color is not allowed.
People have been known, in breeds where missing teeth are a fault or even a
dq, to carry with them some kind of written proof that the tooth (teeth) was
there and is now missing from some kind of accident. Judges don't care about
that...if the tooth is missing, it is a fault or a dq. Don't ask me to explain
that one, either.
The presence of a foreign substance, or use of any product that will change
the natural appearance of the dog, is not allowed in any breed. Mouth problems,
of course, are breed specific as to whether they are faults or dqs, if anything.
Missing testicles is a dq in every breed in the AKC...the dog must have two
testicles normally descended.
Therefore, if the testicles are not normal and not fully descended, the dog
must be dq'd.
Can't think of anything else...if you can, ask away.
