The reason was to achieve consistency between the name that one needs to specify for shares (res=<controller name>) and the module that one needs to load (modprobe <controller name>)


Here's yet another microscopic nit on my part :)

        I think the name listenaq suggests the functionality of the module far
better than laq. Why not just have res=listenaq and keep
ckrm_listenaq.(ko|o|h|c) ?

Good point. Will shift it accordingly while changing the I/O controller name.
