Yes, but you can configure clamd to run a selfcheck (which would find
the database update) more often:

(from the clamav.conf file)
# Do internal checks (eg. check the integrity of the database structures)
# By default clamd checks itself every 3600 seconds (1 hour).
#SelfCheck 600
