That was made to improve performance, the Changelog say so.

But again, scanning mailboxes in a _special_ way is not what clamscan was
designed for.

The debug option spewing out a message number is equivalent to the other option
we pointed out: formail can be used to skip N messages, or to separate them and
give you a number.  To me it is much better to use a proper mailbox filter that
sepparates the messages and then scan them; the filter may understand other
formats, not just the flat file one -- clamscan would be playing catch with
specialized filters which is a waste of resources.
