It is not a requirement, you can check DNS (which is what freshclam does):

$ host -t TXT current.cvd.clamav.net
current.cvd.clamav.net descriptive text 
"0.97.1:53:13335:1311105238:1:60:30929:144"

Or if you're worried about stale DNS:
$ for i in `seq 3 7`; do host -t TXT current.cvd.clamav.net ns$i.clamav.net; 
done|grep text
