I ran into this a few weeks ago. I have not created a definition check, but for 
AVG 10 (we use AVG 2011 Business Version, shows up as 10.x) I created a 
Registry check for a Registry Key of HKLM\Software\Avg\AVG10\

(Case sensitive.)  I can send a screenshot if needed.
