Even after I'd moved back to my home state of Ohio from NYC, where I'd lived
for 8 years until the summer of 2000, the most touching, heartfelt statement
of support I received in the days following 9/11 was not from my American
relatives but from my sister's in-laws in a small town in southern France.
In the late 90s, they put me up for a week in their home, even though at that
time, I spoke no French. (I do now, grâce à Dieu).
Please tread lightly when you discuss the French -- remember them also as
ancestors and relatives of Americans. Vive la France!
