 I can't imagine why anyone would build XFree86 nowadays ;)

 6.9 is a slightly different matter - it's no longer current or
supported, but it is a hell of a lot easier than modular-X.  But it's
in current blfs and multilib issues can probably be resolved by
searching the blfs-support or clfs-support archives.

 I agree it sounds like vandalism - forcing users to log in before
allowing them to change things is probably a good idea.
