i try this and its absolute the same:
checking if "/boot/grub/stage1" exist ... yes
checking if "/boot/grub/stage2" exist ... yes
checking if "/boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5" exist ... yes
 running "embd /boot/grub/e2fs_stage_1_5  (hd0)" ... 15 sectors are embedded
succeeded.
setup (hd0)grub[2490]: segfault at 00000000f7a64bda rip 00000000f7a64bda

sp 00000000f7a64aac error 15
Segmentation fault

maybe, is ext3_fs the troublemaker?

i think not. i use the build instructions from book. but when make runs 
i can see "gcc -m32 -O2 ..."
