Grub was putting executable code in a peice of allocated memory that was
not supposed to be executed. The addition to the patch changes the way
the memory was allocated. eg. a general protection fault was called and
the kernel killed the program with a segfault.

Jim,
     I think this should be a seperate patch. It's really not related to
disk-geometry.
