For example, my clfs user (attempting to recreate your situation, but
with "arm" mode) has:

clfs-arm@bradford:~$ env
CLFS_HOST=x86_64-cross-linux-gnu
TERM=xterm
CLFS_TARGET=armv4-unknown-linux-uclibc
OLDPWD=/home/clfs-arm/sources/gcc-build
LC_ALL=POSIX
CLFS_ARM_ARCH=armv4t
CLFS_ARM_MODE=arm
CLFS=/opt/clfs-arm
PATH=/opt/clfs-arm/cross-tools/bin:/bin:/usr/bin
PWD=/home/clfs-arm
CLFS_ARCH=arm
PS1=${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w\$
SHLVL=1
HOME=/home/clfs-arm
CLFS_ABI=aapcs
CLFS_ENDIAN=little
CLFS_FLOAT=soft
_=/usr/bin/env

Just to make sure we're on the same page with me trying to reproduce
your issue.
