Thanks. Following your suggestion I've just asked about this on the Bluefish users group email list. FWIW the feature I describe (syntax-aware auto-indenting) is common in the Lisp world, not only in emacs but also (to name just a few that are fresh in my memory) in MCL, DrScheme and LispWorks. I think it's the Lisp world norm. In the Clojure world versions are also available in (at least) Eclipse/Counterclockwise and NetBeans/Enclojure, although these aren't as refined as I would like.
