i know it's special, but I don't see why that has to affect printing/serializing.
What if I typed a map using :type, then wanted to save it as text somewhere and get it again? After I've read it back, it's no longer typed and whatever code was expecting it no longer works. There's also my particular issue, which is sending data back and forth from a Clojure backend to a ClojureScript backend. I substituted :type with :class to get it to work, but I don't see why such a hack is needed. I understand why someone would write the code you pointed out, but I don't think it's really necessary or even helpful.
