Thank you David and Alex, I am now at least up and walking if not running. The David Nolan examples certainly helped, though in some senses they raised as many questions as they answered. I notice that the mies template doesn't use optimizations and that the index.html file references some google scripts from :output-dir. I will have to investigate further as I don't follow what they do.
I also found another tutorial based on the early chapters of ClojureScript Up and Running http://www.myclojureadventure.com/2012/09/intro-to-clojurescript-getting-started.html Strangely, following these instructions, I got the early examples from the book to compile. Goodness knows why they didn't work before.
