My real problem is that I would like to boot off of clonezilla and
proceed to mount the root filesystem (of the box being cloned) to

Currently when I clonezilla fdisk reports my root filesystem type to
be 83. When I try to mount this like
mount -t ext3 /dev/sda2 /mnt
I get the following error message
VFS: Can't find ext3 filesystem on dev sda2
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2 ...
.....and bunch of other suggestions including see dmesg
Any suggestions...

/dev/sda2 is swap, did you mean you want to mount /dev/sda3 actually?
Or please run:
sudo /sbin/blkid
