Just thinking out loud here, but wouldn't it be possible to put Knoppix on a hard drive (not using the install procedure, but just dumping the iso image onto a filesystem), and have it probe the hardware whenever the machine boots up? I'm sure you could even have it probe the hardware once and then have an init script that writes the configuration to disk, and disables the hardware probe and itself for future boots.
