Personally, I'd borrow and burn a copy of SuSE 8.2 Pro from our lending
library. SuSE is simple to install, has great simple to use management
tools, and is very well integrated. The patching is very  smooth and can be
easily automated if you want it so (also doesn't require a membership).
Historically I've also never had difficulties with SuSE's patches breaking
things, where I've had this happen with other distros, albeit a few years
ago.

Honestly, the reason I switched and remain committed to SuSE is that it
behaves very smoothly, is well integrated and YAST2 is an amazing management
tool. Nice selection of packages too. It'll run like a champ on a 300MHz
too.

Even if you do the ftp install, it's a good choice. I don't think there are
many things as empowering in the age of technology as freely and legally
installing an OS an all the software you could ever want from 3 floppies
over a good net connection.
