if there is enough interest in various SIGS, it may make sense to have a quick
10-15 minute all-CLUG meeting each month and then break out into separate
groups with different presentations / topics / formats.

i know i'd start showing up every month again (as opposed to my pitiful
sporadic attendance) if it meant spending 1.5-2 hours with other people
interested in and working on OSS code and the areas of interest around that
(tools, languages, methods and practices, etc)...
right now CLUG meetings are more about socializing and networking than
anything else for me. i do pick up an interesting tidbit most times i'm
there, but it's rarely of enough interest to make the CLUG meetings a
priority for me. having meetings where the topic matter is more personally
interesting or where i'm kept busy doing something would certainly help. at
the same time, i hardly expect the bulk of CLUG to veer in a certain
direction based on my personal desires. i suppose it comes down to what
CLUG's goals and target audience for meetings are. and perhaps it isn't
crusty ol' ppl like myself ;-) and that'd be fine. i'll still be around on
the list here and come to installfests and other events as time & schedule
permits, as i'm sure many other ppl will be; and that's not necessarily a bad
thing =) it's hard to be all things to all people.
of course, the devil('s advocate) in me asks, "But should CLUG be only one
thing to one group of people?"
(just when you thought you had a straight answer from me ;)
which is where i resonate with Niels' answer.
